   general
   Born in Colmar, Jean, count Rapp served as aide-decamp to Napoléon Bonaparte (see napoléon i) when he was first consul and, after having fought in the campaign in Egypt and at the Battle of Marengo, was named ambassador extraordinary to Danzig (Prussia) (1807-09). He then served with distinction during the Russian campaign and the siege of Danzig (1813-14). Commander of the Army of the Rhine, charged with defending Strasbourg during the hundred days, he retired at the time of the Second restoration but was nonetheless raised to the peerage in 1817, after going over to the Bourbons.
